The cornerstone of our program is Zimmer Biomet’s commitment to ensuring that team members and business partners conduct themselves ethically and in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, industry codes, and company policies, including refraining from any bribery, kickback or corruption-related activities. 

Zimmer Biomet has established anti-bribery and anti-corruption policies and procedures that cover, among other things, interactions with healthcare providers and government officials. These policies and procedures are reinforced by a robust training program as well as periodic auditing and monitoring. Zimmer Biomet has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to bribery and corruption.

Code of Business Conduct and Ethics

The Zimmer Biomet Code of Business Conduct and Ethics embodies our commitment to the highest ethical standards and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. It reinforces our commitment to acting ethically and with integrity in all that we do and guides positive interactions with customers and with people in the communities in which we live and work.

Industry Code Compliance

Zimmer Biomet is committed to compliance with a variety of industry codes designed to ensure that relationships with healthcare professionals and other customers are conducted in accordance with the highest ethical standards and transparency. These codes each recognize that adherence to ethical standards and compliance with applicable laws is critical to the industry’s ability to preserve and promote its collaboration with healthcare professionals and serve to clarify and distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate activity between healthcare professionals and companies.

Without reservation, Zimmer Biomet strongly endorses both the spirit and the letter of the relevant industry codes for associations of which Zimmer Biomet is a member, including the following:

Speak Up: Report a Compliance Concern

Being a Trusted Partner is fundamental to the success of Zimmer Biomet and our ability to deliver on the mission to improve the lives of patients around the world. 

One way to gain trust is by empowering every voice to speak up when something is wrong. Zimmer Biomet has an online reporting system and global direct-dial telephone numbers for the reporting of compliance concerns (the “Speak Up Hotline”). Anyone may use the Speak Up Hotline to ask questions or report known or suspected compliance concerns related to violations in any of the following areas:

  •  Applicable laws, regulations, and/or industry codes
  •  U.S. federal health care program requirements
  •  Zimmer Biomet’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethics
  •  Zimmer Biomet’s policies and procedures

Concerns may also be reported about Zimmer Biomet’s accounting, internal controls or auditing-related matters; or for any other general compliance concerns or issues.

Any form of retaliation against anyone who raises a concern in good faith is prohibited. 

The Speak Up Hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All reports are received by a trained operator at an independent third party provider hired by Zimmer Biomet. Reports are confidential and may be made anonymously, if permitted by law. Zimmer Biomet will investigate and follow up on all Speak Up Hotline reports received.

Our Global Compliance Team

Zimmer Biomet’s global Compliance team is comprised of highly skilled and dedicated lawyers and compliance professionals, located in countries around the world, including the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, and China.

There are four regional compliance teams supporting the business in the US & Canada; Asia Pacific (APAC); Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA); and Latin America, as well as global compliance teams responsible for compliance operations, investigations, monitoring, third party due diligence and trade compliance.  Collectively, the teams work to ensure Zimmer Biomet team members have the training, tools, and guidance necessary to perform their jobs in a legal, ethical, and compliant manner.

Senior Vice President, Global Chief Compliance Officer

Angela leads Zimmer Biomet’s global Compliance function as well as the regional Legal function in Asia Pacific. She is responsible for the broad spectrum of legal and compliance advice and solutions to both the Zimmer Biomet organization as a whole and to the Asia Pacific business entities, including the implementation of compliance policies and training to team members and business partners as well as the screening of business partners.

Prior to joining Zimmer Biomet in 2010, Angela worked for Covidien in Singapore, Lloyds TSB Bank plc in London, and Texas Instruments in its European and Asia Pacific regional offices. She has extensive international legal and compliance experience in the healthcare, financial services and technology sectors.

Vice President, Compliance Officer, US and Canada

Blaine leads the US and Canada Regional Compliance team and also serves on the Global Businesses Group leadership team. He joined Zimmer Biomet in 2011, where he was responsible for product liability litigation and risk management. Prior to Zimmer Biomet, Blaine spent five years in private practice where he focused primarily on employment litigation in federal and state courts. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University and Notre Dame Law School.

Vice President, Compliance Officer, Latin America

Santiago joined Zimmer Biomet in July 2019 to lead the Latin America Compliance team, where he provides support to the business units operating in the region. Santiago is based in Miami, Florida and brings more than 20 years of international experience in industries, such as medical devices, pharmaceuticals, technology and telecommunications to ZB. Before joining ZB, he spent nearly a decade at Covidien, where he served as Vice President, General Counsel, Latin America, and more recently, he served as Executive Director and International Counsel, Latin America, at Alexion Pharmaceuticals.

Vice President, Global Compliance Functions and Deputy Chief Compliance Officer

Benjamin is responsible for the global Compliance functions, which include the compliance monitoring, investigations, operations and third-party compliance teams. He also oversees efforts to drive continuous improvements to the Compliance program.

Benji joined ZB in February 2014. Previously, he was in private practice, focused on white collar criminal defense, government investigations, and corporate compliance matters. Benji received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University and his J.D. from Columbia Law School.

Vice President, Compliance Officer, EMEA

Heidi has led the Zimmer Biomet EMEA Compliance team since 2010. Before joining Compliance, Heidi spent eight years as associate counsel in the Zimmer Biomet EMEA Legal department. She has extensive international experience in legal and compliance-related topics in the medical device industry, and has been an active member of the compliance committees for various medical device industry associations in Europe and the Middle East. Prior to joining Zimmer Biomet, Heidi served several years as Legal Counsel for SAir Group, the holding entity of Swissair Ltd. She graduated from the Eberhard-Karl University of Tubingen, Germany, with a degree in law and obtained a second state exam in law at the District Court Constance, Germany. Heidi also holds a Ph.D. in law from the University of Berne, Switzerland and is a graduated Compliance Officer (Univ.) from University of Augsburg, Germany.

Paul leads the Asia Pacific Compliance team, where he is responsible for managing and overseeing all legal and compliance matters as well as implementing global legal and compliance initiatives in the APAC region. He joined Zimmer Biomet in 2019 and is based in Singapore. Before joining Zimmer Biomet, Paul worked at Norton Rose Fulbright as Of Counsel in their Singapore office, providing legal and compliance support to clients in Asia Pacific and around the globe with a focus on white collar crime, anti-corruption compliance, and internal investigations.

Carrie Ashcom
Vice President, Global Compliance Monitoring & Internal Controls

Carrie serves as Vice President, Global Compliance Monitoring & Internal Controls at Zimmer Biomet. She began her career in the medical device industry nearly 20 years ago, addressing transparency and FCPA compliance for GE Healthcare. Since joining Zimmer Biomet, Carrie has spent more than a decade serving in a variety of finance and compliance roles. Carrie holds a Master of Arts degree in industrial and organizational psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology; an MBA in healthcare management from Indiana Wesleyan University; and Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration and marketing from the Indiana Institute of Technology. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Psychology.

Dan is Vice President of Global Compliance at Zimmer Biomet, where he oversees the Global Third Party Compliance and Global Operations teams. He joined Zimmer Biomet in 2015 as part of the APAC Legal & Compliance function. Before that, Dan spent five years at an international law firm based in Washington, D.C., where he focused on civil and criminal litigation, government investigations and corporate compliance matters. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.

Mathias Gubler

Director, Global Compliance Operations

Mathias leads the Global Compliance Operations team, where he is responsible for the strategic oversight of all global compliance training initiatives as well as the development and maintenance of all global compliance policies and procedures. This is a role he assumed in October 2020. Previously, he served as a Compliance Director in the EMEA region, where he provided compliance support to the EMEA Central and Africa regions. He joined Zimmer Biomet in February 2013. Before Zimmer Biomet, Mathias gained broad international work experience in the field of legal and compliance, having served as a Junior Legal Counsel for the Legal & Compliance Department of ABB Switzerland, and through his work at law firms in Switzerland and Singapore as well as at the District Court of Bulach-Zurich, Switzerland. He was admitted to the bar by the Supreme Court of Zurich and holds degrees from the University of Augsburg, Germany, and University of Zurich.

Director, Global Trade Compliance

Steve joined Zimmer Biomet in July 2019 as Director, Global Trade Compliance. He joined Zimmer Biomet after having served as part of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Trade in Washington, D.C. Beginning his career as a customs inspector, he moved to the CBP in 2009 to serve as Acting Executive Director, Trade Policy and Programs, before becoming Deputy Executive Director, Office of Trade, where he provided oversight and direction for five divisions. He retired from that position prior to joining Zimmer Biomet. He is based in Warsaw, Indiana.

Vice President, Global Compliance Investigations Counsel

Terri is Vice President, Global Compliance Investigations Counsel, at Zimmer Biomet, a role she assumed in July 2020. She joined ZB in 2016, and most recently served as the Director & Senior Counsel, Global Compliance Investigations, based in Singapore. In this role she was responsible for leading confidential internal investigations on behalf of ZB throughout the Asia Pacific region. Previously, Terri was based in Washington, D.C. and led ZB’s internal investigations in Latin America. Before Zimmer Biomet, Terri spent seven years as an associate in Baker & McKenzie’s Compliance, Investigations & Government Enforcement practice, where she worked on a wide range of internal and government investigations for publicly-traded companies with a particular focus on the FCPA and other anti-corruption laws. Terri is a graduate of Colby College and George Washington University Law School.
